WORLD PEACE SUMMIT OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS WILL HAVE A LARGE REPRESENTATION FROM THE JEWISH AND ISLAMIC FAITHS

The Grand Mufti of Syria and Chief Rabbi of Israel to join one-thousand religious leaders at Historic Summit opening at the United Nations on August 28th

New York—[August 17, 2000]—Opening at the United Nations on August 28th, The Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders will bring together religious and spiritual leaders from more than 50 countries and from every major religious faith.

Two of the largest contingents are from the Jewish and Islamic faiths. The Summit provides a rare opportunity to engage these leaders in frank and meaningful discussions of how they can work together to increase understanding and reduce tensions among their communities.

A draft Declaration for World Peace is being prepared for consideration and potential signature by all participants. The gathering is also expected to consider plans to establish an "Advisory Council" of religious leaders who might support United Nations conflict prevention and resolution efforts.

After meeting at U.N. headquarters, leaders will engage in two-day working group sessions at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to devise ongoing initiatives to address regional conflict, poverty, and environmental problems.

Following is a representative list of the leaders from the Jewish and Islamic faiths, providing a small snapshot of the depth and diversity of the leadership attending the Summit.
